What causes Wrist Pain?

Several hand and wrist conditions can cause wrist pain. The most common causes are sudden traumatic injury and overuse from repetitive movements. Some medical conditions can also cause wrist pain, these include rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pregnancy and diabetes.

Just as there are many causes of wrist pain, the symptoms of wrist pain vary widely. Most commonly these include:

 

  • Tenderness of the joint
  • Redness or swelling
  • Pain when performing regular movements and activities

Assessment

Wrist pain assessment typically includes:

 

  • A conversation about any recent injuries or activities that have triggered the wrist pain
  • A full assessment of the wrist structure
  • A possible x-ray

Treatment

Wrist pain treatment will vary depending on the cause of your injury or condition. Common wrist pain treatments include:

 

  • Customised splinting
  • Education on injury prevention and rehabilitation
  • Exercises
  • In some cases, surgery may be suggested if conservative treatments don’t work
