Sports Injuries

Understanding hand and wrist sports injuries

Hand and wrist injuries are particularly common in sports. Most sports injuries are caused by either a direct trauma to the hand or wrist such as:

  • a strain
  • dislocation
  • ligament tear or fracture
  • from a chronic injury or overuse

Assessment of sports injuries

A typical assessment for a hand or wrist sporting injury involves:

  • A conversation about your sporting activities
  • A discussion of how the injury occurred (in the case of traumatic injuries)
  • A thorough examination of the hand, wrist shoulder and arm

Treatment of injuries

Your hand therapy practitioner will create a treatment plan that is specific to your injury and lifestyle. Most commonly this will include:

  • The creation of a customised splint
  • Education on injury prevention and rehabilitation
  • A customised exercise program
  • A referral for an x-ray
  • In some cases, surgery.
