15 Aug Post-Operative Hand Therapy is the Key to a Successful Recovery
Whether you’ve just undergone hand surgery or you’re preparing for one, your journey to recovery doesn’t end in the operating room, it continues with specialised hand therapy.
As a hand therapy practitioner, I’ve had the privilege of guiding many patients through their post-operative rehabilitation, helping them regain strength, mobility, and confidence in their hands.
Why Post-Operative Hand Therapy Matters
After surgery, your hand may be stiff, swollen, or weak.
Without proper rehabilitation, even a successful surgery can fall short of its goals. That’s where targeted therapy comes in.
A personalised post-op plan helps:
● Reduce swelling and scar tissue
● Restore range of motion
● Improve grip strength and function
● Prevent complications like stiffness or tendon adhesions

What to Expect in Post-Surgical Hand Therapy
We work closely with your surgeon to ensure your therapy aligns with your procedure and healing timeline, that may even include involving your hand therapist t observe your surgery.
Depending on your surgery, your therapy may include:
● Gentle mobilization and manual therapy
● Custom splinting to protect healing tissues
● Gradual strengthening and functional retraining
● Education on scar care and pain management
My goal is to empower you with the tools and knowledge to heal well and return to the activities that matter most to you.
When to Start Therapy
Early intervention leads to the best outcomes. In most cases, we begin therapy within days or weeks after surgery, depending on your surgeon’s protocol. The sooner we start working together, the sooner you’ll notice improvements.
