12 Mar Benefits of custom made splints
Posted at 12:35h in Blog
At Melbourne Hand Rehab we offer a variety of splinting options to help treat different injuries affecting the fingers, wrist and elbow.
We make customised splints and braces in-clinic and usually during the first appointment. Most of our splints and braces are made from thermoplastic materials. Some splints and braces can also be made from leather.
Your hand therapist will fabricate a custom made splint to help meet your specific needs. Benefits of a custom made splint include:
Personalised fit
Designed specifically for an individual’s hand, ensuring a precise fit. This helps in providing better support, comfort, and effectiveness for the specific condition or injury.

Making a splint for De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis
Improved functionality
Since they are tailored to the unique anatomy and needs of the user, custom splints often provide more efficient stabilisation and better functional outcomes, allowing for improved mobility and use of the hand.
Pain relief
A properly fitted splint can reduce pain by immobilising the affected area, offering support to muscles, joints, or ligaments, and alleviating stress on the injured or affected areas.

A static progressive wrist splint using thermoplastic as hinges. These splints are used for increasing range of movement for a stiff wrist in flexion or extension.
Enhanced comfort
Custom splints are designed to match the shape of the user’s hand, reducing areas of pressure or irritation that might occur with generic splints. This can result in better long-term wearability.
Better aesthetic appearance
Since custom splints are designed with the user’s preferences in mind, they can be more aesthetically pleasing, often being more discreet and less bulky than ready-made splints.

Beyond black, white and beige, splints can be made in variety of colours.
Increased compliance
The comfort and functionality of custom-made splints often lead to better compliance with wearing the splint as prescribed, helping to ensure the effectiveness of treatment and rehabilitation.
Long term benefits
Well-fitted splints can aid in better joint alignment, reduce the risk of deformity, and support faster recovery over time.
